Connections
Add the databases UnpackData reads from. Every dataset, query, chart, and alert starts with a connection.
When to use this
Use Connections to link UnpackData to a database server. To bring in data from an online service instead, use API Connectors.
Add a new connection
- Open the Connections page (labelled Data Source Connections at the top) and click Add Data Source.
- Fill in the details. Provide Name, Description, and pick a Source Type: Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL.
- Enter the server information. Depending on the source type, fill in Server / Data Source, Database / Initial Catalog, and either check Use Windows / Integrated Security or enter Username and Password. The Connection String Preview updates as you type, so you can check your details. Not sure what to enter? See the Sample Connection Strings panel on the page.
- Test Connection to confirm the portal can reach the database. If the database is behind a firewall, allow your workspace's IP address first. The IP Address panel on the page shows it, and the Connection guide shows how to allow it.
- Save. The connection becomes available in Datasets, Queries, the Insight Builder, and other features that read data.
Manage existing connections
Each row on the Connections grid has three actions:
- Edit: update any field on a connection.
- Sync: update UnpackData's list of tables and columns after they change in your database. New columns won't appear in datasets until you sync.
- Delete: remove the connection. Only available once no dataset depends on it.
